‘Petrarch’s First Sight of Laura’ early 19th century oil painting by Henry Nelson O’Neil
British, c. 1840
Canvas: Height 129cm, width 176cm
Frame: Height 165cm, width 207cm, depth 12cm
Painted by a renowned Victorian artist, Henry Nelson O’Neil (British, 1817-1880) around 1840, this very fine oil on canvas depicts the first meeting of Petrarch and Laura in a Church in Avignon in 1327.
Petrarch (1304-1374) was an Italian Early Renaissance poet and the love tale including him and Laura comes from his writings. It is believed that Laura was the love of his life and the main subject of most of his works.
Identified as Laura de Noves of Avignon, she is depicted in the centre of O’Neil’s painting. Dressed in light-coloured clothing with pale floral decoration, the skilful portrayal of light highlights her figure and ensures the observer’s attention is drawn towards her. The figure of Petrarch standing next to her is also highlighted by the artist. He is observing Laura in a deep state of thought. The colour palette includes shades of deep red, beige and brown adding to the peaceful scene portrayed by the artist. The two main figures are dressed in luxurious clothing whereas most of the others are dressed less ornately. Many are seen in a deep state of reverence during a mass, looking towards the altar.
Framed in a carved giltwood frame, the bottom centre is mounted with a plaque reading ‘Petrarch’s first sight of Laura / in the Church at Avignon. / Henry O’Neil, A.R.A’.
This large painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1840 (no.505), giving it a very important provenance. Furthermore, it later entered the collection of the Hermitage guest house on the Isle of Wight originally built for one of Queen Victoria’s ladies in waiting.
With an important provenance, impressive size and intriguing subject the painting would magnificently adorn the appropriate interior space.
