These panels are fine examples of the scagliola technique, perfected by Enrico Hugford in 18th century Tuscany. Known for his use of pastel hues, polished surfaces, and expert perspective, Hugford's work immerses viewers in tranquil scenes of local life. While unsigned, these panels share characteristics with others attributed to Hugford, including a pair sold at Sotheby's in 2016 for £100,000.
Scagliola, an art form using powdered selenite plaster, was developed in the late 16th century as an affordable alternative to marble. Hugford's mastery of the technique elevated it to new heights. His closely guarded method, described by his pupil Lamberto Gori, allowed for intricate and realistic depictions. The result, when polished, often resembles a painting under glass.
Ignazio Enrico Hugford, born in 1695, excelled as a Benedictine monk before becoming Abbot of Vallombrosa. His dedication to solitude and manual labor, along with training in scagliola production, led to his mastery of the art form. He spent the remainder of his life in Vallombrosa.
