In Isabel's own words:
In the deep dark pink woods
Once upon a time in the deep dark pink woods, there was a bird, a leopard and a horse. They lived in harmony together until one day the leopard woke up and decided it would like a fried egg for breakfast. It had never had a fried egg before but it had heard some humans talking about fried eggs as they walked though the forest. From what the leopard understood it was part of what was called a ‘full English’. The walkers had said that it wasn’t a ‘full’ English unless there was a fried egg. The egg sounded delicious, the golden yolk surrounded by a white halo, almost regal. Just the thing for a ferocious leopard who was king of the forest. The leopard licked its lips with anticipation.
While the bird was sleeping the leopard went to its nest and took six eggs. Then it crept away on its powerful but silent paws to find a frying pan.
The fire was burning hot and bright, the fat had melted in the pan and the leopard took one of the eggs between its sharp claws ready to break it into the pan. Just then the egg opened its eyes and said, ‘please oh please don't eat me! I’m not an egg I’m a magic spell and if you eat me you will be cursed forever!’
The leopard was surprised but it had its heart set on a fried egg and a fried egg is what it was determined to have. It cracked the egg into the pan and watched as it sizzled and popped.
The fried egg was as delicious as predicted, so velvet in texture and delicate subtle flavours. As the leopard licked the last bit of grease from its whiskers there was a thundering as if of a hundred hooves. But only one horse appeared, it was the pink Show Pony. It danced and trampled on the leopard and said ‘a leopard cannot change its spots, from now on your spots will tell the truth of what you have done.’
From then on, the leopards spots spoke to everyone they met and told them how the leopard had taken what did not belong to them.
About Isabel Rock and her work:
Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations.
Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel’s hair brush that gives incredible fine lines and was purchased on her travels in India.
Born in Hammersmith, London in 1981, Rock knew her destiny was to be an artist. Studying Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton and graduating with First Class Honours in 2004 she went on to do a Masters Degree at The Royal College of Art in London, continuing her studies in printmaking and drawing, graduating in 2008.
Her first solo show at Bearspace Gallery in Deptford, London in April 2009 sold out and was the beginning of a career that continues to rise. Rock participated in the first ever India Art Fair represented by Art 1821 Gallery, where her detailed and intricate work was met with great appreciation from collectors and public. She has since participated in international residencies in India, Iceland, Germany and West Africa as well as building up her portfolio and exhibiting at various galleries internationally.
In 2013 she won the prestigious UK Arts Foundation Printmaking Fellowship, a £10,000 award given to emerging artists in certain fields, only six are awarded each year. This funded a move to Berlin as the vibrant art scene in the city seemed to be the perfect place to make the next steps in her career. The city proved to be a valuable creative inspiration as it was here that Rock began to explore the written side of her visual stories, which she now performs at spoken word nights.
Rock sat out the pandemic in her port-a-cabin studio near Reading, UK, creating a series of large-scale collages and writing surreal short stories. In 2021 she was awarded a Special Commendation in the renowned Trinity Wharf Drawing Prize. Shortly after this she was evicted by the local council and is currently living and working in London where she also enjoys roller skating, growing sweet peas, reading novels and thinking up new and wild things to draw.
Rock continues to exhibit widely and has a long list of exhibitions and shows to her name. In 2019 her work was selected for exhibition at the Royal Academy in the London Summer Show and in 2021 she was selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Isabel Rock's work is held in Public Collections including the V & A in London and the Royal College of Art, London and also in many private collections in the UK and India.

Artwork Details: Call of the Sea, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Call of the Sea: The sea was calling, calling its sirens song. It threw tempting little waves flirtatiously on the shore. 'Come,' it said, 'come.' The sea glittered with promise, it whispered sweet nothings as it rolled the tiny gem pebbles on the beach. 'Come to me,' it said, 'I will show you the world, the true meaning of life.' The people felt the pull, the blood pumping in their veins, like a magnet they were drawn towards the sea. Mesmerised, bewitched, they stripped of their clothes, leaving them in molehills on the beach. The breeze caressed bare bottoms, free from the constraints of life. They stepped cautiously at first but as excitement overwhelmed them they broke into a run as they neared the water. The sea tickled their toes and beckoned them in, making sweet promises of delightful pleasures. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Just one of those days when everything goes right and the world is an exciting place. The very pavements seemed to be alive with magical stories to tell of the many feet that had trampled upon them. Everything seemed right with the world because I was going to meet my friend for a glass of wine. You know that friend who just gets you? Who you don't have to explain everything too, and they laugh in all the right places. I was going to meet that friend and have a glass of wine and everything else could wait. It really was the best day ever. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube.
