Jaylen Pigford
Dotted Skull I, Contemporary Figurative Painting, Human Figure

2023

About the Item

In this latest series of work, Pigford carefully places familiar symbols that he has referenced throughout his career within colorful but unknown settings. Pigford appoints two protagonists; plants and skulls, as he contemplates the balance of life and death. He argues the inevitability of death should inspire us to appreciate the beauty of life, and rejects a focus on fear. Jaylen Pigford (b. 1996) is an Afro-Latino painter born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas and based in Houston. The son of an African-American father and a mother of Mexican descent, Pigford is a self-taught artist and has been creating artwork since childhood. He sees his work as a balance of light and dark. His paintings are autobiographical reflections on past negative experiences and adversity to tell a story of self-growth through uplifting works on canvas. “It is always good with the bad. We all struggle, our failures test us, it’s what action we take to correct them that matters most.”

    By Tsz Kam
    Located in Austin, TX
A 2020 contemporary figurative painting measuring 33.5 inches tall and 24.5 inches wide. This unique painting includes a certificate of authenticity issued by the gallery. "Stories of superstitious myths scared me as a child but I also had a sort of fascination and unquestioned reverence for the figures in these myths, an attitude that continues in my adulthood. Even though I have moved to Texas for over a decade, these superstitions still have some small power over me and the way I think. Since early 2020, I’ve become more and more interested in the grotesque and monsters as art subjects in my personal work." Tsz Kam (Big Chicken) was born in colonial Hong Kong and moved to Texas at age 13. Kam’s family history of being political refugees of communist China...

Jasmine Zelaya is a multi- disciplinary first generation Honduran- American artist based in Houston, Texas. The daughter of parents who immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1970’s, much of the artist’s work references the aesthetics of that period. Zelaya’s work explores themes of identity, assimilation and the brown body through a familial narrative rich with symbolism. Zelaya received her BFA in Painting in 2006 from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Blaffer Art Museum (Houston), Project Row Houses (Houston), The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts (Lubbock), and was recently included in the 2021 Texas Biennial: A New Landscape, A Possible Horizon, at the San Antonio Art Museum. Recent public art projects in Houston include Twins for Art Blocks at the Main Street Marquee and Detroit Red at the Moody Center for the Arts. Her work has been featured on television media and in numerous publications, including as a cover artist for New American Paintings (#132). Zelaya has used portraiture to explore themes of identity throughout her career, specifically from the perspective of a first generation, Latinx artist. This newest body of work is heavily informed by memory, the awkwardness of youth, and the experience of assimilation. Graphic floral masks, a subtle head tilt, teary eyes, and explosive gradients of color all coalesce to capture the strong, mixed emotions of introspective teen years. **This work is on view at Ivester Contemporary...

  • «This is not a prison» Acrylic on Canvas by Ole Fredrik Hvidsten
    By Ole Fredrik Hvidsten
    Located in Oslo, NO
Signed and dated. «This is not a prison» was part of O. F. Hvidsten's first solo-exhibition «This will never pass». The works comprising the exhibition is first and foremost a visual memory of two dramatic years since 2020 that have affected us all. Covid, and its consequences, have become a common point of reference that we will all talk about and bear remembrance to for a long time. But our memories are like life itself; dynamic and in constant change, often weakening with time, and can either ebb out or be reinforced. O.F. Hvidstens work in this period stand out as an anchor point for this common experience. Ole Fredrik Hvidsten...
