About the Item
"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players," wrote the bard of Avon. And who hasn't said, "Life is a balancing act"? "The Performance" is a theme dear to the heart of Southern artist Jeni Stallings, who creates work that often draws symbolism and situations from her dreams and personal experiences. She tends to render those moments in her pared-down unique style, in which her almost always feminine subject matter is rendered with clean lines and glowing color. With their layers of beeswax, her paintings capture imagined moments with a sense of joy--and just a touch of Southern eccentricity.
Who hasn't felt at times that life is a performance? Jen Stallings' "The Performance" speaks to that common feeling. The unicycle isn't an everyday mode of practical transportation. It requires balance and control, and the skill required to ride a unicycle successfully isn't learned overnight. Here, Jeni creates a proscenium stage with a single figure atop a unicycle. All eyes are on her. It is a moment requiring great focus and attention, but she remains beautifully calm, poised, and balanced on a notably fickle vehicle. Perhaps this is you?

"A native of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and a graduate of the Memphis College of Art, Jeni Stallings creates work that often draws from her dreams and personal experiences. She tends to render those moments in a muted, femininity-infused surrealism far from the hard-edged style of notable Surrealists like Salvador Dali. With their layers of beeswax sealing a moment into memory, her paintings draw from a lexicon melding dreamwork with a touch of Southern eccentricity." --Felicia Feaster, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, September 2021 "I guess you could call me a storyteller who seals her thoughts and dreams in wax." Jeni Stallings creates her lyrical, dreamy paintings using the ancient encaustic technique that entails heating beeswax to coat the painting’s surface. Her works hang in collections throughout the United States and elsewhere. Jeni Stallings presently lives with her husband and son in Atlanta, Georgia.
