SOLID SOUND - Oil on Paper and Panel Painting of Skull on Table

2021

About the Item

SOLID SOUND is an oil on paper piece by Jered Sprecher. The first layer of the painting was simply the result of the artist cleaning his brush, working without a conscious goal. At some point, an idea began to emerge from the random dabs and smudges, and the skull took shape. The artist first painted from memory, then referenced a model. The painting follows the tradition of still life exercises, but eschewing the usual precision and realism which is their goal. Sprecher plays with the idea of illusion and fleeting life - the skull is only partially rendered, in some places resembling the light bouncing off a shining surface. Its shifting perspective brings to mind the classic vanitas meaning of skulls in art: the frailty of life and mystery of death.

This painting was inspired by the artists very first toy, a small blue giraffe, given to her as a day-old baby. It is something that has been around her whole life, and even though it is inanimate, there is a feeling of personification through the years of wear. Her brother as a baby would call giraffes “fa,” which is always a sweet memory she associate with this toy. Samantha Van Heest...
