About the Item
"Marilyn" is an acrylic on canvas portrait of Marilyn Monroe by 20th Century, Philadelphia pop artist John Stango. The 49" x 40" canvas is unframed and signed "Stango" in the lower left, as well as signed on verso. The portrait of Marilyn is painted predominantly in red, white, blue, and orange. The canvas is in excellent, original condition and comes from a private collection in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia artist, John Stango (Born 1958) received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Graphic Design at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, Stango began by working as a visual merchandiser and display artist for Macy's and Bloomingdale's department stores. Craving a more artistic field, Stango began creating original T-shirt designs in 1985 at his studio in South West Philadelphia.
Finding a great deal of success in this venture, Stango's hand silk-screened designer shirts were being featured in the same department stores he once worked. Macy's, Wanamaker's, and Fiorucci featured his high-fashion, one-of-a-kind T-shirts. Once again, Stango craved something more artistic and this time turned to painting full time.
In the beginning his Pop paintings were featured as backdrops for window displays at several Philadelphia department stores. With time, Stango began showing his images of Pop icons and all that exemplified glamour in area galleries.
