About the artist: Another highly influential Scottish painter of this period. Born in Port Seaton, near Edinburgh, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London.
He is best known for his semi-abstract studies of figures, and scenes based on the fishing villages of East Lothian. His oils are usually brightly coloured, while he also produced monochrome works in oil and watercolour, as well as printed works.
Represented in the National Galleries of Scotland, New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Gallery in London.
