Jules Pierre van Biesbroeck
The woman with the peacock

1905

About the Item

Artist: Jules Van Biesbroeck Title: Woman with the peacock Medium: Oil on canvas Signature: Signed lower left “J. van Biesbroeck”. Exhibitions: 1905, Venice Biennale In this work by Jules Van Biesbroeck, the reference to the aesthetic theories of art pour l’art contained in Huysmans’ À rebours and D’Annunzio’s Piacere, but also to the magical and timeless world of the Pre-Raphaelites, seems to seep out of the image of this woman holding a flower in her fingers, a symbol of the vanitas of earthly things, as is the multi-coloured peacock behind her. A hymn to beauty and its ephemeral essence, which is revealed in an atmospheric, opalescent painting and which he took as a model for the Allegory of Beauty of 1907, which bears the Greek inscription kalos. Generally good condition, the painting is in first canvas, on the lower part of the robe, on the left, there is a restoration below the knee

  • Diptych “The Cries of Fire”; “The Voices of the Stream”
    Located in Roma, RM
Artist: Eugenio Agneni Title: Diptych “The Cries of Fire”; “The Voices of the Stream”, c. 1865-71. Medium: oil on canvas mounted on wood, cm 128 x 60 each Signature: Signed at the bottom on the base of the frames provenance: Marquis Corsi Salviati; Rome, private collection The two canvases mounted on wooden supports are clearly attributable to Eugenio Agneni (Sutri, 1816 - Rome, 1879), a paradigmatic figure of an Italian painter of the Risorgimento years who combined a successful and continuous international artistic activity with an intense political and military activity, starting from the Roman effervescence following the election of Pius IX to the Mentana expedition and then in the early years of Rome as capital city, a period in which he held various administrative posts. The clarity of attribution of the works derives not only from the large central inscription inserted in the elaborate neo-Gothic scenic layout that encloses the two works in a diptych, but also from the direct kinship that links them to the cycle of frescoes painted between 1865 and 1868 for Marquis Antonio Maria Corsi Salviati in the reception hall of the family villa in Sesto Fiorentino. Agneni resided more or less permanently in the Florentine area between 1863 and 1871 after a phase of European-wide wanderings that began at the end of the Roman republican experience of 1849, in which he was involved to the point of having to hide for some time from July of that year at the home of Marquis Salviati, whom he therefore already knew before his subsequent move to Florence. The need to stay away from Italy, as well as his connections with Mazzinian exiles and evidently also a proven ability to reinvent himself in different cultural spheres allowed Agneni to profitably frequent the artistic scenes of London and Paris, cities in which he lived and worked, obtaining commissions of absolute importance (he decorated several rooms at Buckingham Palace, the Covent Garden Opera and the Louvre), and presenting his works at the Royal Academy in London. Therefore, if we are to keep faith with the remarks of his friend Luigi Calamatta ("you are full of money...

  • Portrait of a noblewoman
    Located in Roma, RM
Artist: Pietro Lucchini Title: Portrait of a noblewoman (1843) Medium: oil on canvas Signature: Signed and dated in the center on the right “P.ro Luchini made Milan 1843” The freshness of colour and refinement of the composition, governed by a technically impeccable drawing and the adoption of a clear, luminous palette, are the main characteristics of this Portrait of a Biedermeier-style noblewoman. The minuteness of the details emphasising the décor and the description of the surroundings and clothing serve to clarify the rank of the woman portrayed. This aristocratic portrait makes Lucchini a true portraitist à la mode, in demand and acclaimed especially in the Lombardy region, but also internationally. In fact, the author's experience in the East is not to be forgotten: in 1850, he received an offer to teach painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, but declined the offer to leave for Constantinople, where he arrived in 1851. He stayed in the East for another ten years, working mainly in Constantinople, Egypt and the court of the Shah of Persia. He worked mainly on official portraiture, adopting the same technical expertise that distinguished him in his Italian years. First canvas painting but with strip line On the back of the canvas, 3 small repairs are visible at the top original coeval frame UV lamp...
