Juniper Briggs
"Collecting Thoughts" Abstract Figure Painting

2023

About the Item

This abstracted figure painting by Juniper Briggs is made with mixed media on Arches paper with deckle edges. It features a vibrant, contrasting palette and captures a woman in a bright yellow shirt sitting in front of abstracted tree forms, resting her chin over one hand and holding a yellow flower at her side on in the other. This painting is signed by the artist on the back of the paper. Juniper Briggs is a mixed media painter with a focus on abstract faces and figures. Presently based in Northern Virginia, Juniper grew up in a community of artists in the Mountains of North Carolina. It was there, surrounded by glass blowers, potters and painters, that she first learned to appreciate art. As a young adult, her international travels (particularly to Mexico and Spain) impacted her love of folk art and Cubism. Juniper’s work explores themes of beauty and contemplation with an exuberant hope that stems from her Christian faith. Faces and figures allow her to navigates these subjects best. Her paintings deal with ideas such as whimsy, joy, gratitude, reflection, faith, longing, sisterhood, strength and vulnerability. Pulling stylistically from both cubism and the classics, Juniper’s work offers a modern and decidedly feminine color palette and perspective. She is fascinated by the juxtaposition between the confidence we present to the world verses the wilderness of emotion we contain within. Above all, Juniper’s work seeks to glorify the Creator by bringing a sense of truth, joyfulness and beauty to her own creations. Juniper is currently in her 11th year of working as a professional artist. Her artwork has appeared in publications such as Domino Magazine, Elle Canada and on the cover of Art & Edit Magazine. She has collaborated with brands such as Framebridge and AllModern. Her work can be found in homes across the United States and abroad. "My work seeks to call attention to the beauty hidden within ordinary moments of pause," Juniper says of her work. "Whether that’s stopping to think something over, spending time with friends, enjoying the warm sunshine on your skin, or simply smelling the flowers. It’s these unassuming, often overlooked experiences that I am most drawn to exploring in my paintings. "Starting with a simple sketch or idea, I rely on my intuition to take me through the creative process. Working instinctually, I begin by building layers, adding and omitting swaths of acrylic paint along with other mixed media details to create playful yet compelling compositions that speak to the human experience. "Pulling stylistically from both cubism and the classics, my decidedly female perspective, and love of design, color and shape, invites the viewer to take a deeper look at the beautiful, moments of pause within their own life." • Spirit
    By William Y. Cooper
    Located in Buffalo, NY
"Spirit" a bold and thoughtful cubist oil on canvas was painted in December of 2001 by African American artist William (Bill) Cooper. William Y. Cooper was a writer, painter, muralist, illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Western New York in 1954 from Birmingham, Alabama, to pursue work, and Buffalo has been his home ever since. In 1975, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University at Buffalo; he was also a state certified art teacher. Cooper woked primarily in oils and acrylics, but also creates drawings on paper. He has painted several commissioned murals and has had more than fifteen one-man shows in Western New York and Ghana, West Africa, and has participated in more than twenty-five group exhibitions since he began his professional career in 1969. His paintings and drawings address both his African heritage and his experience as an American through symbolism and metaphor. He observes, “I am an Afrocentric artist. My worldview is rooted in an African frame of reference and a deep, abiding sense of the creator from whence I draw my inspiration, strength, and a sense of who I am. The use of symbols allows me to explore literal ideas.” Among Cooper’s published works are two children’s books, 77 Jackson Street, Rear and Nakai and the Red Shoes, and a novel for adults, The Mopane Tree. Cooper founded the Afrocentric Artists’ Collective and ran the organization from 1979 to 1981. In 2013 he was designated a “Living Legacy” artist by the Burchfield Penney Arts Center, the latest in a series of honors which has also included awards from the Arts Council of Buffalo & Erie County, the New York State Council on the Arts, and Alpha Kappa Alpha...
