Karen Hoepting
'Marry Me' original acrylic painting signed by Karen Hoepting

2001

About the Item

30 x 30 inches, canvas 39.5 x 39.5 inches, frame Signed 'K. Hoepting' and dated, lower right Entitled within composition, lower right Inscribed 'PE 15085' en verso Framed to conservation standards with a gold gilded moulding and a linen liner Karen obtained her Honors Bachelor Degree of Fine Arts from University of Waterloo in 1997. Her studio work at the time was divided between working with drawing mediums on paper and with acrylics or oils on canvas. Today, she combines her media together working on both canvas and paper creating brilliant, whimsical abstract images that make reference to the animal she loves. The work of the German Expressionists and the Symbolists have always intrigued Karen. She has felt emotionally drawn to the vivid and powerful imagery of Kathie Kollwitz, Egon Shiele and Gustav Klimt. Like some of these artists, Karen speaks to the viewer through symbols and stylistic motifs. Animals have been recurring subjects in Karen’s work for several years. She grew up on a livestock farm and formed a strong attachment to animals. Today, Karen has two dogs and two cats, and is an Ontario Humane Society Volunteer: “Animals are definitely a passion for me. I feel compassion for all forms of life. Naturally my feeling about animals [has] transferred into my art.” Her art is an exploration of animals’ spiritual and natural qualities and how these co-exist with industrial society. Through her primitive yet sophisticated style, she combines abstract elements together to create happy and lighthearted works.

Her distinctive artwork is well known in Uganda and throughout East Africa. Her bold, fluid lines explore complex subjects such as women empowerment and national development with economy and grace. Her central artistic preoccupation is the continuation of distinctively African culture. In 2007, she started her own label, Atal Stella. In a captivating new collection, Alex Guofeng Cao dazzles audiences with his unique twist on instantly recognizable images. Inspired by history and pop culture, Cao manipulates one iconic image to create another in his extraordinary large-scale works. From a distance, the pieces appear to be a singular image but as the viewer approaches closer, you find each work is a masterfully crafted compilation of minute detailed images layered next to one another, creating a mesmerizing and hypnotic optical illusion. Cao meticulously places each smaller image to form a dynamic gradient from dark to light which tricks the eye into seeing one image. This expertise in contrast is exemplified in all of his works, from striking black and white pieces to stunning explorations in high-definition color. He cleverly mirrors this visual contrast in his subject matter by subverting the main image and creating a dialogue between the macrocosm and microcosm. Take the piece, Ali vs Armstrong; here we see the iconic image of Muhammed Ali’s victory composed of thousands of tiny portraits...
