Le Nhu Ha
'Red Umbrella' Contemporary Vietnamese Oil Painting

2012

About the Item

‘Red Umbrella’ is a large figurative oil on canvas exterior painting created by Vietnamese artist Le Nhu Ha in 2012. The painting depicts the exterior façade of a Vietnamese building's front steps. A woman with a red umbrella walks down in the gentle rain. Le Nhu Ha is an experienced and exquisite artist. His works contain immense detail and nuances between shadings of light and dark, sunlight and shadows. The majority of the colors in his works highlight a darker shade, which focuses the eye toward the more prominent brighter objects. Within the emphatic portion of his works, the subjects are composed of whites, reds, and yellows. In Vietnamese culture, the color red often signifies good luck and is used to ward off evil spirits. Beyond the colors and objects, Ha’s unique perspective leads one into the subtle and mysterious depths of each painting, drawing upon his spirituality.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...
