PROVENANCE Private Collector, Seville Manuel Rodríguez de Guzmán (Seville, June 20, 1818-Madrid, 1867) was a Spanish painter of the Romantic period who excelled in the composition of costumbrista themes. He also painted scenes of literary inspiration with a costumbrista background, fashionable history paintings, such as the Taking of Vélez by D. Fernando el Católico and Pedro I ordering the corpse of Jesus to be thrown out of a window. his brother, whom he had had assassinated and, exceptionally, a portrait of Eurico, the Gothic King (Museo del Prado), commissioned by José de Madrazo, in response to a request from the queen, for the chronological series of the kings of Spain. In 1856 he obtained an honorable mention at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts for a canvas inspired by Cervantes' novel Rinconete y Cortadillo, with the Monipodio patio treated in the manner of his most characteristic costumbrista scenes.
