Margaret Putnam
Margaret Putnam was a San Antonio artist who left an artistic legacy rare even in the art world. She was a 20th-century woman with a Renaissance soul who lavished her work with brilliant color, always breaking and making the rules to achieve the desired effect. An explorer, Putnam was self-taught. She worked in oil, watercolor, wax resist, casein and pastel, exploring new avenues, developing new techniques, combining mediums and creating a unique style. She had a background in fashion illustration as well. Even after becoming partially paralyzed from Lou Gehrig's disease, she continued to work relentlessly. She had a little arts and crafts community in La Villita. She was a remarkable woman, a talented artist and in the real spirit of the Alamo, she represented true Texas grit. Her strokes were broad, her colors bold, her paintings powerful and expressive. She painted an 18-by-Seven and a half foot mural at the top of the San Antonio Hilton Hotel. She has won many awards such as River Art Show, San Antonio, Beaumont Museum, Texas Fine Arts Museum and Texas Watercolor Society. She has also won the Old Testament National Exhibit Award, Award for ‘One of Ten Outstanding Women in San Antonio’, ‘Outstanding Artist of the Year’ from San Antonio Art League and J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award. She was also the three-time winner of Top Award for Oils from Texas Fine Arts and received Recipient of the Year award from the San Antonio Arts Commission. Revered for her innovative techniques and inimitable style before her death in 1989, her renown continues even today.

- "The Safari Hunt for the Man Eating Tiger" San Antonio Texas Black Folk ArtistBy Johnny BanksLocated in San Antonio, TXJohnny Banks (1912-1988) San Antonio Artist Image Size: 14 x 22 Frame Size: 21 x 29 Medium: mixed media "The Safari Hunt for the Man Eating Tiger" Biography Johnny Banks (1912-1988) In my opinion one of the greatest Texas folk artists of all time. The following information was compiled and submitted by Stephanie Reeves: John Willard Banks, San Antonio, Texas, African American Folk Artist John Willard Banks, black self-taught artist, the son of Charlie and Cora Lee (McIntyre) Banks, was born on November 7, 1912, near Seguin, Texas. At the age of five his parents took him to San Antonio, where he attended Holy Redeemer School until the age of nine, when his parents were divorced and John returned to his grandparents' farm near Seguin. From childhood Banks's favorite pastime was drawing pictures on his Big Chief tablet. He later recalled, "As a kid I used to lie flat on my stomach, drawing and drawing. . . . My mother had to kick me off the floor to sweep." While helping out on his grandparents' farm, Banks completed the tenth grade before striking out on his own. His favorite activities during his youth were singing in a gospel quartet and playing baseball. In his adult years he worked in oilfields and cotton fields, drove a truck, and tended a San Antonio service station. During World War II he joined the army; he held the rank of sergeant and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war he returned to San Antonio, where he worked as a custodian at Kelly Air Force Base, at Fort Sam Houston, and at a local television station. Banks married Edna Mae Mitchell in 1928, and they had five children. The marriage ended in divorce around 1960. In 1963 he married Earlie Smith. His art career began in 1978 while he was recuperating from an illness for which he had been hospitalized. Banks's wife admired her husband's drawings and secretly took several of them to a San Antonio laundromat. There she hung the drawings on the wall, offering them for sale at the price of fourteen dollars. They were purchased and taken to a gallery for framing. Quite by chance, a San Antonio physician and collector of works of art by black artists...Category

- "Whispering Shadows" Mixed media portrait of black woman with teal flowers, birdBy Janice FrameLocated in Edgartown, MA"As an African-American artist in today’s world, I embody the vast differences found in our collective backgrounds. I view them as cultural assets. We are always self discovering and these self discoveries take us in surprising directions. We must gain strength from what we learn from each other as well as listen to that persistent, ever present, intuitive self. The connection of one’s own rich heritage and person growth will travel into the inevitable and critical connection between African Americans and Africa. These connections are rich and very important. They Exist! My work, I hope, will serve as a creative connection between the African diaspora and western culture. It is this connection that cause my creative forces to react." Janice Frame...Category
