Margherita Leoni
Autumn vine shoot on a silver background

2020

About the Item

A vine shoot in warm autumn colours shows a ripe, purplish bunch against a silvery background. With elegance and great balance Margherita Leoni (b. 1974 Bergamo) weighs solids and voids, warm tones and cold tones, renewing the centuries-old tradition of botanical art with personality. Margherita Leoni, an undisputed botanical artist on the Italian and international scene, ranges from watercolour to oil painting, often applied on gold or silver foil backgrounds that she prepares herself. Her relationship with nature is direct and conscious, thanks to the solid academic education she acquired in Brazil where she has spent most of her adult life. Her collaboration with the botany faculty of the University of São Paulo has enabled her to develop interesting research on rare botanical species. For this reason, most of her artwork illustrates Brazilian botanical species, both rare and common. Her mastery of watercolour allows her to participate in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. For her extensive botanical knowledge and skilful use of watercolour, Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margherita Mee. Her most prestigious awards include: Shirley Sherwood for the Kew Garden exhibition in 2014 (London, Botanical Artists of the Third Millennium, 2014) selected three of her works. Moreover, in 2016 the MUSE in Trento, the science museum designed by Renzo Piano, dedicated a temporary solo exhibition to her.

It was there that she started a collaboration with the botanical faculty of the local university, allowing her to developed an interesting research in rare botanical species studies and drawings. The artist's mastery of watercolour allows her to take part in botanical expeditions where she paints in plein air. Given her exquisite watercolour technique and her extensive botanical knowledge, Margherita Leoni is considered the heir of Margaret Mee...
