Michael Hafftka is an American artist based in Brooklyn; his works are represented in the permanent collections of several important museums including MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, National Museum of Art Washington DC, Carnegie, and others. The Met added an additional 9 works to its collection in December 2018. This medium-sized painting by American Jewish artist, Michael Hafftka, depicts a blindfolded man Hasid as he is shot. He is a landscape devoid of any vegetation, buildings, animals or other people, which adds to the sense of isolation and helplessness. The painting relates to the Holocaust and the traumatic Jewish experience. Hafftka's parents were survivors of the Holocaust who lost almost all of their families; growing up with that history has had a profound impact on Hafftka's world view and art. Whatever the subject matter, Hafftka’s paintings are internal visions, not literal representations of an event or idea. His paintings are the sum of his memories, intellectual ruminations, daily observations and dreams that materialise as a vision, which he is then compelled to paint. He is a painter who has continuously and courageously stood by his convictions and who, despite his family’s experience as Holocaust survivors, seeks the good in people. But precisely because of those experiences, Hafftka is well aware that good can quickly become sinister if we let our guard down.
