About the Item

Michael Hafftka is an American artist based in Brooklyn; his works are represented in the permanent collections of several important museums including MoMA, The Met, Brooklyn Museum and others. His poignant paintings speak of the frailties and vices inherent in the human condition. With a dramatic use of color and expressive brush work, his images can be simultaneously breathtaking and confronting. NOTE: This work ships from New York. "Man and Beast" by Michael Hafftka is a watercolor figurative painting on archival paper. A man dressed in yellow robes restrains an angry looking white animal; his fingers can be seen curled around the chest of the beast. There is a sense of the mythological in this piece - the striped horn and humanoid teeth of the beast suggest this is no ordinary beast of burden, and the over-sized hand of the man belongs to a giant. The strong forward movement of the beast describes a violent struggle between man and beast, but as the beast's front legs are in the air, it is caught in the weaker position and is being pulled in towards the man's body. It stands as a contemporary analogy of man's desire for control and power over those that he sees as lesser or more vulnerable than he. Whatever the subject matter, Hafftka’s paintings are internal visions, not literal representations of an event or idea. His paintings are the sum of his memories, intellectual ruminations, daily observations and dreams that materialise as a vision, which he is then compelled to paint. He is a painter who has continuously and courageously stood by his convictions and who, despite his family’s experience as Holocaust survivors, seeks the good in people. But precisely because of those experiences, Hafftka is well aware that good can quickly become sinister if we let our guard down.
