About the Item
Michael Pemberton (b. 1974, England) is an emotive abstract painter, focussing on the energy and form of the human subject. Michael was educated at Chelsea School of Fine Art in London and later studied at Slade School of Fine Art, University College London and The Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
In 'Human frequency 6', we again see the use of the totem like shape of the figure. Whereas in Human Frequency 2, there is black, red and cream blocks of colour, here we have an achromatic space. This becomes less about temporal qualities of the division of space, and more about a neutral palette for comparison. Grey has the ability to absorb colour in the phenomenon called Successive Contrast. Whether this is a purely visual play, or a reference to the 'grey area' in ethical discourse is unclear but its neutral position hones the focus for contemplation.
