About

‘Buffalo Boys’ is a large contemporary lacquer on wood figurative painting of horizontal format created by Vietnamese artist Nguyen Xuan Anh in 2008. Featuring an exquisite palette made of brown, grey, black and gold tones, the painting is made of two panels that, put together, depict a musician playing the flute sitting on what appears to be a bull, while two additional ones stand on the left side of the composition in a frontal position. The brown background, highlighted with golden touches, leads our eye to its upper triangular accents, shaped as steep mountains and topped with a grey sky with mesmerizing clouds. This grey accentuation is ingeniously placed throughout the composition, moving from the upper section, to the bulls and finally the various birds that are pecking the ground. The artist played beautifully between linearity and curves, as well as the warmth of the brown and gold contrasted with the cold grey fields. Nguyen Xuan Anh has much diversity in the subjects of his paintings. Many of Nguyen Xuan Anh’s works display high-rise apartments and crowded streets, while in contrast, others depict landscapes of mountains and fields of moonlight. Some of his works have greater variations in displaying ethnic minorities. Anh has a widely used range of colors from the traditional lacquer colors of red, yellow and black while incorporating light green and silver in certain works. Nguyen Xuan Anh’s current body of work explores the changing Vietnam. Traditional Vietnam consists of ancient sacred structures to modern contemporary buildings. He has an astounding ability to mix the traditional with the modern. This unique style has created a new definition of Vietnamese society as Anh strives to capture the new Vietnam’s internal feeling and quality as well as the external perception it generates. The external is perceived by the visible changing landscape, but the internal is held within Anh’s spirit. Nguyen Xuan Anh’s spirit contains the power and aspiration and the concealed reality of what Vietnam can present to the world. Nguyen Xuan Anh was born in 1977 in Hanoi, Vietnam and graduated from the Industrial Fine Art College in 1999. He has exhibited extensively in the United States, Singapore, China and the United States.
