About the Item
Bholanath Fakir is a reflection of Lord Shiva who got married to Sati, the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Sati married Shiva against her father's will and as a consequence, they were excluded from the list of invited guests for a Yajna conducted by Daksha. Interestingly, we come across similar instances of being outcast, when a girl marries a boy of her choice, against the will of her family. In this depiction, the artist has compared the image of Shiva and Sati (Bholanath Fakir and Gauribala Fakir) with such unfortunate couples. Such instances are common everywhere in the artist’s country. Therefore, the artist addressed them as Bhavaghure (vagabond) - people who do not have any specific abode. This painting also illustrates the effect of very old photography.
