Peter Husband
Passing By, Canadiana history and cottage life in a postmodern juxtaposition

2023

About the Item

PASSING BY is a classic Canadiana paintiong in postmodern style by Peter Husband, with acrylic paint, oil pastel, and found images on stretched canvas. It measures 40 x 30". What began as an experiment for the artist – to gather on one canvas the outdoor activities he loves, the cottage life he loves, the country he loves – turned into a successful series of Canadiana paintings. Playful juxtapositions abound – fishing lures, an island of trees, an oar and a vintage Canadian postage stamp to name a few. Of course the details enrich the experience. The three words beneath the oar, "Scull, Sweep, Blade" are older words (colloquial) for an oar. If you're an avid canoeist, you likely know. If you're not, you will still enjoy the fact that the harkening to tradition, localized and regionalized tradition perhaps, is intentional and intrinsic to the artist's project. The "hula popper" lure is an actual lure for bass fishing. The Loon, the "Spiritbird", is represented in the Woodland Style, an indigenous First Nations painting practice. Peter Husband cites the artist Goyce Kakegamic as an inspiration for this loon. Note the scribing into paint around the Loon, and what appears to be a hardline petroglyph of a May Fly (or Shad Fly to some, who occasional invade Central and Northern Ontario.) While these details are compelling, it's the entirety of the painting that delivers its distinctive charm. Over twenty different visual elements are arranged in a relaxed, casual manner. Without a hint of contrivance, the artist is presenting a Canadian landscape and a Canadian history in a very modern framework. Peter Husband is a self-taught Canadian artist with equal passion in the worlds of technology, the great outdoors and cottage life, and Canadiana. His paintings are in collections in Canada, the United States and Mexico. A solo show of his work will be presented by Gagné Contemporary gallery in Toronto, Canada in 2023.
