Hunting Scene, 18th century

1700s

About the Item

Oil on Canvas. Northern European school of the 18th century. The large scene, set in a northern landscape of dense vegetation under blue-blue impervious peaks, depicts the climax of a fawn hunt: the horseman, who occupies the upper part of the scene, is spearing the prey, terrified and decomposed in agony; all around the pack of dogs participates, running around the rider and prey. Prominent among them all is the dog in the bottom center, the only one with light-colored fur: 's intense luminosity that emanates and brings out the accurate patterning of his fur, the moving musculature, and the animal's heightened expression, make him the protagonist of the scene, drawing the eye to him, while all the other figures, including the rider, become the outline, accurate and precise but not leading. It is precisely the accuracy in painting the animals, to place the 'work close to the production of Philip Peter Roos , known as Rosa da Tivoli: originally from Frankfurt but later moving to Rome, where he remained until his death, this artist was most active as a painter of animals, captured in close-up against landscape backgrounds and executed with rich color and intense lighting effects. The great success that had and the resulting very broad production (sometimes at the expense of the quality of the works), justify the frequent attribution to this painter of works with the subject matter and painting technique close to his, such as the one presented here, which moreover is not documented and validated. Restored and re-tinted, the painting is presented in a late 19th-century frame.

This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...
