About

Fluency by definition is a skill, often language that is performed with ease. The work of Rein de Lege could easily be likened to a language. Being Dutch born, but having lived and worked in Barcelona, Spain for the last twenty-four years the artists is skilled at speaking several languages. This language however belongs solely to the artist and to suggest he is fluent is an understatement.

Rein de Lege’s adept process of painting is born from an authenticity of mark making few artists come to know. Each work is comprised of instinctual yet well considered marks that never seem labored. It is in this effortless ability that Rein de Lege finds fluency and it is this fluency that makes his work so desirable.

The face has long been a staple of the artist’s work and this year’s exhibit does not deviate. Incredibly large-scale works speak with a pleasant hush and the smallest of works carry with them a vociferous energy. What is present in them all is a cleverly placed mark that calls into question the true intention of the work and allows the viewer to decide the true nature of each.

In this painting "Mighty Crowd" Rein paints faces in a crowd across the entire canvas with his signature impulsive mark-making and aggressive splatters of color. Multi-colored with predominantly blues and reds
