SHIMSHON HOLZMAN (1907–1986) Israeli landscape and figurative painter known worldwide for his water color paintings filled with extensive color flows within water stains. Early in his career, he made several influential visits to Paris, France where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and exhibited frequently. Holzman was a founding member of the Artists' Quarter in Safed, and participated in a group exhibition of Israeli artists at the opening of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 1932. He represented Israel at the 1959 Venice Biennale. The paintings of Shimshon Holzman are full of momentum, and they represent the spirit of an era rich in practice that looked to the future with optimism.
