Stuart Mackenzie
'Him', A Large Glasgow School Oil Painting Portrait on Canvas

1990s

About the Item

A large Glasgow School oil on canvas portrait by Scottish artist Stuart Mackenzie. The painting is presented in a plain baton wood frame. Though not signed the painting was acquired directly from the artist and thence by descent. 'Him' is of a boy in his school uniform, shorts, long socks, shirt and jerkin jumper, the whole outfit slightly in disarray, one can imagine him with a slingshot in his back pocket. This is one of a pair of very strong and powerful paintings of children. (The other is also available separately on 1stDibs, see last photo). We the viewer are firmly held in the gaze of 'Him'. Mackenzie has achieved a remarkable play of light and shade that changes completely depending on the lighting. The painting is full of the character of the sitter and the humour of the subject changes from different viewpoints. It is a real statement piece that would be imposing in any interior and would grace any collection. Stuart Mackenzie was born in 1959. He studied at The Edinburgh College Of Art from 1979 to 1983 and then courtesy of The Richard Ford Award in Madrid, Spain. He was the first Artist in residence in Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1987, taught at Robert Gordon’s University from 1987/88, and has taught in The Glasgow School Of Art since 1988, where he currently teaches the Mlitt (Masters in Painting) and is Pathway Leader in Mlitt (Masters) drawing. He has been a Visiting Artist in many national/international Institutions and an external examiner for Leeds Metropolitan University. He is a member of The Academic Council at The Glasgow School Of Art, The Exhibitions Committee, and a Council Member of The Royal Scottish Academy. He is also the Convenor of The Royal Scottish Academy’s New Contemporaries Exhibition and sits on The Committee for The Richard Ford Award Madrid Scholarships ( London). Stuart has shown nationally and internationally, and his work is held in many public and private collections and has been the recipient of many awards and prizes. Recent Exhibitions include: The Club at the Ivy at The London Book Fair, 2015; ‘Surface Value’, James Freeman Gallery, 2015; ‘Learning to Draw, Drawing to Learn’, The Fleming Collection (which he jointly curated with Professor Roger Wilson), 2013; Donghau University Shanghai, 2013; ‘Subtle Subversion’, a drawing conference, 2013; Scottish Drawing Royal Scottish Academy 2014; and The Annual Exhibition Royal Scottish Academy, 2014 and 2015. • 18th Century Portrait, Major Alexander Brown in Military Uniform
    By Sir David Wilkie
    Located in Cotignac, FR
18th Century Military portrait of a young officer in Napoleonic period military dress. The painting is not signed but the subject is Major Alexander Brown. The work is oil on canvas later mounted on board and presented in a fine 'Regence style' carved gilt frame. There are labels to the back referring to the subject, 'Major Brown of Trinity' and a framers trade label from Edinburgh. A magnificent and imposing portrait of a young military officer in the prime of his life. His red uniform adorned with fine buttons, fringed epaulettes and high gilt collar. His ruddy complexion offset by his stylish hair, a quiff and swept forward to the sides as was the fashion at the time. Sir David Wilkie RA (18 November 1785 – 1 June 1841) was a Scottish painter, especially known for his portraits, including formal royal ones, and scenes from his travels to Europe and the Middle East. He painted successfully in a wide variety of genres, including historical scenes. His main base was in London, but he died and was buried at sea, off Gibraltar, returning from his first trip to the Middle East. He was sometimes known as the "people's painter". He was Principal Painter in Ordinary to King William IV and Queen Victoria. Apart from royal portraits, his best-known painting today is probably The Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Dispatch of 1822 in Apsley House. Sir David Wilkie was actually admitted in 1799 (despite only being 14) through the influence of the Earl of Leven...
