About the Item

The Trees The Cosmos and the Couple Painting Oil on Linnen In Stock Theo Mackaay (1950) Utrecht, the Netherlands Mackaay works with recognizable shape:: women, men and animals, with a pointer at the primal form. Archetypal motives like warriors, women, horses, archers, lovecouples, created with his own signature. An example of this work is the wellknown ‘Gouden Kalf’, the big prize of the ‘Nederlands Film Festival’, designed in 1980 by Mackaay, commissioned by Jos Stelling, filmdirector and initiator of the festival. There has been big developments in his work after the calf, but the basic forms are still to be found in his work. The renewal in his work has been a internal fight, between the two sides of his brain. The wild artist animal and the changed, peaceful, contemplative sculptor. The last one won! Not only did he change as a human being, his work changed with him. Big, tough, expressionist bronzes and stone statues whith the woman and animal as favourite subject, changed in touching, intimate bronze sculptures. In the early work of Mackaay, the masters of the past were more visible, like Marino Marini and Ossip Zadkine. Now it seems, the artist is letting go of the past and found his own form language, after all the highs and lows in his life. His wandering through France, Italy and China brought him to Malaga in Spain, his current residence. Maybe it is the Mediterranean Sea or the Spanish sun, fact remains that Mackaay is closer by himself, like the rough shell dares to show his delicacy.

"Nude in French interior", in a room lighted from one side. Part of my Nude in interior series. Inspired in contrast and colors by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Nude placed in a French palace, a sober classical interior in contrast with the modern relaxed attitude of the main character. Size is 150x150cm / 59x59in, oil on canvas. Painting was part of my solo show "Nude in Interior", March 2022. Can be shipped rolled in a tube for faster and less expensive shipping. Please inquire. "I started by painting interiors, being interested in space and perspective through my studies. These scenes evolved, when I added the human figure. I focused more on the human figure and its relation to the background. The human figure is more present than ever in my paintings now. As a woman artist I’ve been preoccupied with the female form and its imagery. One of my goals was to capture the solitary moments and the nude’s relation to the surrounding space. My interest turned from depicting the space to rendering the atmosphere and the scene as a whole, the feeling a woman adds to the environment: warmth, desire, joy, a feeling of power and control, or the opposite – sadness, despair. Here is a collection of figurative paintings, exploring the nudes in interior spaces, seeing the nudes from my perspective, as a woman artist, considering the physical and spiritual realities of a woman’s body, in a new level of intimacy. My paintings are the opposite of objectifying a woman’s or a man’s anatomy. Painted works, featuring female nudes and a also men nudes...
