About the Item

Artist/ School: Thomas Bromley Blacklock (Scottish, 1862-1903), signed and inscribed. The son of the English teacher at Kirkcudbright Academy, Thomas Bromley Blacklock studied in Edinburgh, and worked in East Lothian before returning to Kirkcudbright. He mainly worked in oil but also did pen and ink landscapes. The model for his picture The Magic mirror is Bessie G. Strang, although at the time of the painting she was Bessie Hunter. He always gave an Edinburgh address for Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions.
