Portrait of a Young Woman with Vase, Oil on canvas, Early Dutch Genre Painting

About the Item

Oil on canvas Image size: 12 x 10 inches (30.5 x 25.5 cm) Period hand carved gilt frame This 17th century Dutch genre painting depicts a young woman holding a jug with a landscape leading on beyond. This composition goes back to a work by Adriaen van Werff, now in the Danish National Gallery in Copenhagen. The RKD database lists another version of Toussaint's work,  today in the possession of the Staatliches Museum Schwerin.   Toussaint Gelton Nothing is known with certainty about the place of birth and origins of Gelton. Though he was registered in the painters’ guild of Amsterdam from 1655 to 1661 and in that of The Hague from 1656 to 1661, his name suggests that he hailed from a French instead of a Dutch family. He was likely the son of Johannes Gelton and Adewina Weijn and the brother of merchant Arnoldus Gelton. Toussaint lived in Stockholm with Maria Dijckmans (daughter of The Hague painter Zacharias Dijckmans).

  • London Costmongers, Urban 20th Century English Oil
    Located in London, GB
Attributed to Mary Adshead 1904 - 1995 London Costmongers Oil on canvas Image size: 30 x 36 inches Framed Costermongers were London people that sold fruit and veg and other ‘perishables’ from barrows. Often wheeling and then stationing their barrow on the street, so their customers could easily come and buy from them. Costermongers were fiercely independent, rebellious in their dress and outlook, and had little time for ‘middle class moralising’ and attempts to suppress or restrict their way of life. (Much like modern teenagers) The men depicted stop work for a break with cups of tea and a few read the newspapers. Next to the man with the yellow apron can be seen some cakes on a plate. A work place , a factory can be seen in the distance on the right. It is possible that the painting depicts a cabmen's shelter, as some did serve outside and many still survive today in London. The style of the painting is very much that of a student of the Slade School in London and has similarities with other artists work such as James Batemen or Herbert Ashwin Budd. On the back of the painting it has in chalk the name 'Rhoades', which could refer to the artist Geoffrey Hamilton Rhoades...

Painting signed lower right "M Kruseman". What sets this painting apart is the large number and complexity of details that the artist managed to include in the scene without visually overwhelming the viewer. The color palette of the landscape is very realistic and harmonious. The foreground of the picture there are people standing by a sleigh drawn by one horse, in front of a charming small castle with turrets, nearby boats frozen in the ice at the pier are visible. The background, on the left side of the scene, we see houses and three windmills standing tall against the winter sky, adding a touch of Dutch countryside charm to the composition. From the frozen surface of the water, the whimsical silhouettes of trees to the intricate details on the façade of the castle and windmills - every element of the painting is a testament to the skill and talent of the artist.
