Traugott Lebrecht Pochmann
Bacchus and Cupid. Neoclassicist genre painting of academic art.

Bacchus and Cupid, c.1822, by Traugott Leberecht Pochmann (born 6 December 1762 in Dresden; died 23 April 1830 in Dresden) Oil on panel, not signed Painting SIZE 15.75 x 12.6 in., 40 x 32 cm Frame size 22.44 x 19.29 in., 57 x 49 cm The portrait and history painter TRAUGOTT POCHMANN is one of the most important artists in Dresden at the beginning of the 19th Century. Trained at the Drawing School of the Academy he became a pupil of the famous portrait painter Anton Graff and then a master student of Casanova. He finds influential patrons and both the courts of Weimar and Dresden purchased. Already in 1796 he is retired and goes to Rome in 1804. 1815 Pochmann established professor at the Dresden Art Academy. The high quality painting had been attributed in the past to Johann Riepenhausen. This could be solved, since a 1997 auctioned painting, only slightly varied replica, confirmed Pochmanns authorship, which manifests itself also in the careful execution, in the typical color, but also the individual execution of sfumato in the present work. ARTIST DICTIONARIES: Thieme-Becker, Bötticher, Saur, Müller-Singer
