About the Item
Signed lower right, 'Zarbano' for Mary Zarbano (American, 1931-2019) and painted circa 1985.
Born in Nebraska, Mary Zarbano received her MFA from California State College at Long Beach before studying with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall in New York. The influence of Modernism is apparent with angular lines and planes reminiscent of cubism and the abstracted features of its human subjects. Nevertheless, Zarbano’s work is also very much her own. Her paintings are deeply intimate, often featuring women and children in muted palettes interspersed with flashes of vibrant color. Primarily a painter in oils, Zarbano also worked in other media including etching and monoprints. Over the course of a long career, both as teacher and artist, Zarbano exhibited widely and with success and her work is registered at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery Library in Washington DC.
