Allegorie della Prudenza e della Giustizia, 1600s

Olio su tela. Scuola italiana del XVII secolo. I due dipinti fanno probabilmente parte di un gruppo raffigurante le quattro virtù cardinali, ovvero Giustizia, Prudenza, Temperanza e Fortezza. Le allegorie sono rappresentate in figure femminili, recanti alcuni dei simboli attributivi delle virtù che rappresentano. La Giustizia si riconosce dai due attributi più comuni, la bilancia, simbolo di equità ed equilibrio, e la spada, segno di potenza distributiva. Anche la Prudenza ha con sé due simboli: uno specchio, simbolo di circospezione che ci permette di evitare le insidie del male ( permette di guardarsi alle spalle) o anche simbolo della conoscenza di se stessi; ed un serpente simbolo di eternità e tempo, ma anche esso simbolo di avvedutezza (nel Vangelo Gesù dice:" Io vi mando come pecore in mezzo ai lupi; siate dunque prudenti come i serpenti e semplici come colombe"). Le due tele, già precedentemente restaurate e ritelate, sono in buone condizioni. Sono presentate in cornice antiche in legno intagliato e laccato, con attuali piccole mancanze e danni.
