"Boys Beneath Lotus, " Paint on Panel, c. 1850

c. 1850

About the Item

This folk hand-painted panel, laden with meaning, was originally an interior painted panel of a large storage cabinet. The panel is painted with a scene of two young boys in traditional aprons, a motif commonly referred to as "ho ho boys." The boys hold lotus flowers above their heads, symbols of purity and abundance. Considered a blessing for many children and good health, the decorated panel likely belonged to a cabinet received as a dowry gift to a newly wed couple.
