The Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist
Oil on canvas: 32 x 27 ½ in. Frame: 37 x 33 in.
This fabulous and well executed painting depicts the Holy Family: Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the elderly Saint Joseph, with the Infant Saint John the Baptist.
Painted by an unknown but highly talented early 19th century Italian artist, and follower of the classical 17th century French Baroque painter Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665).
Scenes from the life of the infant Christ were extremely popular in 16 and 17-century Italian painting. The subject of the Holy Family with the Infant Saint John the Baptist can refer to several paintings in public collections around the world: Beccafumi, Correggio, Murillo, Parmigianino, Rosso Fiorentino, and Nicolas Poussin.
Gallery notes: This work shows the influence of Poussin’s paintings but does not appear to be a direct copy.
