Still life of lemon upon a pewter dish, oysters, grapes, and 3 peaches.

About the Item

Still life of lemon upon a pewter dish, oysters, grapes, and 3 peaches. The painting belongs to the tradition of still life painting in Antwerp. Late XVII- early XVIII century. Oil on canvas, applied on wooden panel. In period frames in painted and silvered wood. Some restorations. This painting is part of a pair of still lifes, it is sold individually or as a pair upon the buyer's request. This painting is reminiscent of the compositions the 17th century Dutch painter, known for his still lifes: Joris van Son (Antwerpern, 1623-1667). Specifically, we see grapes, oysters and peaches arranged on a table. These objects are typical of Dutch still lifes of the period. Fruit, oysters, lemon are represented with great realism and attention to detail. Author pays close attention to reflections, surfaces and light. The tone of the performance has an intimate atmosphere. The small-sized painting features a chromatic palette focused on the harmony between whites and grays. It demonstrates a skillful chromatic gradation reminiscent of the Dutch Monochrome movement of the 1620s-1640s. The sober color scheme is accentuated by sporadic touches of color, such as the yellow of a lemon, whose spiral-peeled skin introduces a dynamic element while symbolically alluding to the passage of time. This Dutch genre painting realism intertwines with symbolism and allusions, as seen in this artwork where reflections on the metal plate allude to sight, the skin of grapes and peaches alludes to touch, oysters to smell and taste, etc.
