About the Item
In The New York Times Arts in America column, Edward M. Gomez writes of Valton Tyler, "visionary seems the right word for describing his vivid, unusual and technically refined paintings, prints and drawings, whose style defies convenient labels. Abstract, surreal, cartoonish, sci-fi fantastic, metaphysical, apocalyptic-Baroque - all of these fit but also fall short of fully describing his art." ("Futuristic Forms Frolic Under Eerie Texan Skies," The Living Arts, The New York Times, June 13, 2000, page B2)
VALTON TYLER
American, 1944 – 2017
Valton Tyler was born in 1944, in Texas City, Texas, an oil refining town and deepwater port on Galveston Bay near the entrance to the Houston Ship Channel. He knew he wanted to be an artist by age 17 when he started drawing. Having inherited manic depression from his father, and with no clear path forward, his brother brought him to the Dallas art dealer Donald Vogel who recognized his talent and arranged access for Valton to use the printmaking department at Southern Methodist University in 1970. After producing his first 50 plates of various sizes over a period of 18 months, Valton had his first exhibition in 1971 at the Gimpel-Weitzenhoffer Gallery in NYC. After Valton finished his series of prints, he started painting which he continued to do until his death in 2017.
Valton Tyler has been featured in The New York Times, Art & Antiques magazine, Raw Vision magazine, and Hyperallergic. Catalogues on Valton Tyler's work have been published by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, and Valley House Gallery. His work has been exhibited in New York at Phyllis Kind Gallery and Rosa Esman Gallery, and internationally at Galerie Claude Jongen, Brussels, Belgium.
In 2016, Edward M. Gomez and Chris Shields produced the film "Valton Tyler: Flesh is Fiction" which can be viewed on the brutjournal YouTube channel.
In 2017, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, presented "Imaginary Worlds of Valton Tyler" a retrospective exhibition including the complete set of prints. An interview with Dr. Shirley Reece-Hughes about the exhibition can be found on the artthisweek YouTube channel.
Will Heinrich's review of the Outsider Art Fair in The New York Times on March 4, 2023, highlighted the work of Valton Tyler.
