About the Item

Acrylic paint on canvas 2019 Signed and dated lower right Unique work The world of William Bakaïmo is a great dreamlike bestiary where humans are not humans, where animals are animals no more. In this strange ark of Noah, the imagination and the dream carve themselves a considerable part to describe a reality that escapes more and more to the artist. He confuses the tracks to restore paintings that question. These hybrid figures half-men, half birds or other rare species belong to the phantasmagorical garden of its creator. As he says : "the lizard that slumbers in me gets rid of its skin every time to become a new man". That’s why the little reptile will often return to his paintings as an animal emblematic of hope, found happiness, painter who renews himself incessantly. Each painting inspires many readings because what more secret he carries in him is surprisingly related to his direct environment or to an actuality which impacts his life and his pictorial universe. In the strange bestiary, there is what lives and pulsates in his heart, his soul but also other dramas that eat the African continent up. He reconciles internal revolts and other more conscious struggles. For example, the acts of terrorism perpetrated by Boko Haram have profoundly affected and revolted him, as the fate of children on the African continent. This world he built himself did not lock the artist into a tight bubble. On the contrary, it claims the influence of other Cameroonian artists such as Joël Mpah Dooh and Hako Hankson whose finely honed characters are surprisingly spontaneous, but also Basquiat whose work has that authenticity that William seeks. In his most recent paintings such as "Freedom" or "Bororo am", the artist broadens his project and explores different pictorial approaches while remaining coherent with his universe. It feels pushed by impulses of creativity, by a new happiness to paint despite the difficulties he faces. With his friend Moustapha Baïdi Oumarou, William Bakaïmo is part of this new generation of emerging talents who place Cameroon as one of the leading countries in contemporary art.
