Yonatan Zohar was born in 2000 in Jerusalem, Israel where he lives with his wife. His Talmudic studies occupy most of his day.
Yonatan was born into a family of artists, who have been living in Jerusalem for several hundred years. His mother was both a painter who exhibited frequently and a classical pianist who would often perform works by Mozart, Beethoven and other classics. His grandmother, too is a known professional painter. Much of his extended family are accomplished artists and musicians.
Shortly after his marriage he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. This offered new challenges and Yonatan turned to painting. Living in Jerusalem, with its rich past and present, coupled with his personal challenges has created a desire to search forms to express his emotions. He turned to painting. In his artwork, he portrays his family’s unique history together with his striving for hope, happiness, and a desire to succeed. His canvases appear decorative, yet meaningful. The background is colorful, simple and bright, with a feeling of hope. Musical images appear to be placed almost randomly on the canvas, as if to express how we appear to be randomly existing in this world. Or perhaps the canvas remains without figures to allow for the viewer’s imagination to ramble. He draws using a quill, the tool of the scribes who write the sacred texts, symbolizing the artist’s family’s deep history in the Holy City.
