About the Item

The Last Supper Workshop of Francesco De Mura (Naples, 1696 - Naples, 1782) Attributable to Pietro Bardellino (Naples, 1731 - Naples, 1806) oil painting on canvas Dimensions: cm. 75 x 102, with frame cm. 94 x 121 Configurable as a valuable work of the Neapolitan school in the second half of the eighteenth century, the proposed painting, which depicts the episode of the Last Supper (Gospel of John 13:21), is attributable to the hand of Pietro Bardellino (Naples, 1731 - 1806), one of the most talented students, as well as a close collaborator, of Francesco De Mura. From an attribution point of view, his early works are incredibly influenced by the influence of the master, so much so that it has often made it difficult for critics to distinguish between the creations of one and the other. Active in the main royal residences of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and attentive to the trends of European art of great fashion at the court of Maria Carolina of Saxony, wife of Ferdinand IV, Bardellino lightens and makes his master's compositions even more pictorial, expressing an elegant Rococo taste in a southern key, which we see perfectly reflected in our canvas. Going into detail, the painting is a derivation of a model conceived and replicated several times by De Mura, and that Bardellino was able to study directly: one version is that of the church of the Annunziata di Capua from 1750, another that for the cathedral of Monopoli of 1755 (*). Thanks to the evocative subject matter, but also to the extreme attention that the author wanted to grant to the rendering of the excitement of the moment, the work is full of charm and extremely interesting. Its scenic setting is very rich, with Christ, the fulcrum of the composition, surrounded by the apostles and caught in the act of blessing the bread and the Lamb, an evident symbolic representation of the Agnus Dei, a symbolic prefiguration of Christ and his imminent sacrifice for the redemption of the sins of humanity. Among the disciples, some observe the scene in amazement, others continue to wonder who the traitor is, while an ephebic John gazes ecstatically at his Master. In the background a thick blanket of clouds condenses from which two winged cherubs emerge, in numerical reference to the two natures of Christ (human and divine), while the seven-flame lamp that hangs on the head of the Nazarene is a clear allegory in the presence of the Spirit Saint in the Upper Room. Finally, the setting that acts as a theater to the scene is of great charm: it is the interior of a sumptuous building with high columns. Works in excellent conservation conditions.
