Hendrik Verschuring
The rest before the departure - Hendrik Verschuring (1627-1690)

About the Item

Oil on canvas Labels on the back We'd like to thank dr. Fred Meijer for his advice. In Hendrik Verschuring's "The Rest before the Departure," we can see how a manis sitting proudly on his majestic steed. The light brown horse has a pristine white man and eyes that gleam with vitality. The horse, its mouth still dripping with water, bears the telltale sign of a recent drink, signaling a momentary respite in the midst of preparations. Its posture exudes a quiet power, a readiness to gallop forth into the unknown. Three eager dogs encircle the horse, their stance a blend of eagerness and loyalty. We can also see what seems to be the remnants of a ruin. The weathered stones echo the passage of time, hinting at tales of forgotten histories, adding a sense of mystery and depth to the scene. Amidst the potential chaos of departure, the ruins stand as silent witnesses, grounding the fleeting moment in a timeless continuum.

The first one was to be seen at Woolley and Wallace, in august 2021. It portrayed a young man, older than our boy, in a Japanese rok, also holding a hunting spear and carving words into a tree. The second one is a portrait of Christiaan van...

Oil on panel Portrait of a child holding peaches, accompanied by a dog. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution on the basis of high-resolution photographs. The present portrayal of a silk-robed child, attended by a pedigree puppy and holding a sprig of expensive, exotic fruit, exudes the burgeoning wealth of the mid-17th century Dutch Republic, and is characteristic of the accomplished hand of Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp. The sex of the present child is difficult to determine with certainty, as young boys also were attired in dresses at this time, but the silk bonnet...
