Inscribed verso: Montmarte
At the end of the 19th century, the agrarian village of Montmarte had been annexed into Paris' ever-growing city limits, and it became a hub for artists and their dealers, cabarets, and even brothels. Vincent Van Gogh lived in this area with his brother, an important moment in his artistic development. Here, Kreisel depicts a nude, white model being depicted by a Black female artist - what would have likely been a controversial scene in America in the jazz era. Not much is known about Kreisel - he may have traveled to Paris and experienced this casual figure painting session, or it may have been conceived of his own imagination, picturing what it was like to be in the center of artistic innovation and liberation.
Kreisel was born in Russia, later moving to Queens, New York. He was a painter, graphic designer, sculptor, and print maker who studied at the Grand Central Art School in New York. He also exhibited at Salons of America in 1931, Lincoln HS in Brooklyn in 1937, and Montross Gallery in 1939.
He was a member of the United American Artists in Woodstock and taught at Kew Gardens Art Centre, as well as the Hyde Park School in Brooklyn.
The Woodstock Art Association lists his death in 1955.
