About the Item
Signed lower right, 'C. Obin' for Claude Obin (Haitian, 1934-2000), titled, 'Cap Haitien' and painted circa 1970.
Born in Cap Haitien, Claude Obin painted in the classic Cap Haitien style that was originated by his father, Philome Obin. A resident of Brooklyn from 1992 due to political unrest, Claude Obin made yearly pilgrimages to his homeland, where he found constant sources of artistic inspiration. His work may be found in permanent collections including the Edith Graham Collection (Trinity College, Connecticut).
''I'm not going to put New York in my work,'' he said, ''I'm all about Cap-Haitien. I have to give respect to where I come from.''
We are pleased to offer this elegant interior scene from the artist's Cap Haitien period.
