About the Item

Nitmat Badawi’s work is of two themes, urban landscape in Aleppo, and figurative of ordinary innocent faces, particularly of women and children. The first theme of inspired by Aleppo urban landscape in the old quarters of the city and created a series of paintings with romantic and poetic scenes focusing the architectural elements with dramatic light that best describe the tranquility and rich history of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. The second theme is inspired by a decade long social disturbances in the city of Aleppo as the war raged on and created a series of paintings by focusing on the facial expression of historical female Women with feminism in mind as as intellectual leaders, rebels, and leaders. Nitmat’s work is not a political in nature but offers us a glimpse of the suffering of the people in Aleppo during the siege of the city. He used symbols, motifs and materials to articulates the pains of the people and painted on found charred wood from broken doors and windows resulting from bombing in Aleppo of a neighborhood close to the artist studio. The artist’s themes offer us an intimate view of the innocence and the suffering of the Syrian people during the war. Materials used: oil, canvas and charred wood.
