Mattheus van Helmont
The doctor's workshop - Mattheus van Helmont (1623 - after 1679)

About the Item

Oil on canvas Signed lower right. At the center of this scene we can see a doctor, studying the brownish contents of a filled flask. The doctor's cluttered desk, adorned with an array of tomes and ancient manuscripts ,bears witness to his scholarly pursuit. Beside the doctor stands a woman, perhaps a a maid. Her gaze is fixed on the doctor's actions. She seems to be drying her tears. Perhaps the doctor is trying to determine if the woman is pregnant. Van Helmont use of dark and light casts the room in an entrancing interplay of light and shadow, heightening the air of mystique. Mattheus van Helmont is known for his large output, which is generally signed or monogrammed, but rarely dated. His known works can be dated to the period from 1638 to 1670. He was a genre painter and specialised in painting interior scenes with peasants, alchemists and craftsmen at work, tavern interiors, village scenes, market scenes and kermesses.
