I enjoy walking around Manhattan and thinking about how Ashcan School painters would depict the scenes. This storefront is on 9th Avenue in what is known as Hell's Kitchen. The look of this establishment exudes Ashcan School hallmarks. As I painted this scene I reworked many areas and tried to keep the treatment of the strokes as economical and sketchy as possible. Each detail is a reminder of the unassuming adaptability of the way storefronts along 9th Avenue develop over time.
About the Artist
Onelio Marrero paints city scenes of everyday life. In an impressionistic style he captures the romanticism of New York City, the picturesque fountains in Central Park and the wet city streets after a rainy afternoon. His use of warm tones creates a sense of nostalgia and the feeling that you have visited or seen this particular scene before. Onelio will often paint from direct observation, or he will work from a combination of photographs and combine numerous sources into one piece. In this way his work combines reality with fantasy, creating a new story with each painting. His work captures an appreciation for beauty in all of its greatest forms; nature, art, and people.

- On the Bowery, Oil PaintingBy Nick SavidesLocated in San Francisco, CA
Artist Comments
Artist Nick Savides depicts a front-facing view of the Bowery at the corner of Bleecker Street in New York City. Structures rise toward a deep blue November sky in contrast to the warm tone of the buildings below. "The white, red, green, and orange shapes seemed to play off one another, punctuated by windows of various shapes and sizes," describes Nick. "The shadows of the fire escape add some depth to a fairly shallow space while a woman in a red sweatshirt runs from the crosswalk toward an onlooker. On the right is the former location of CBGB, which closed in 2006."About the Artist
Nick learned to paint from his mother when he was a child, but it wasn’t until college that he decided to be a career artist. His realist images of New York City are inspired by the drama of the city–the changing light, the spontaneous magic. Nick begins his process with reference photographs from his daily life, often shooting the same scene at multiple times of the day. He brings the images back to his Brooklyn studio where he composes a scene in Photoshop, adding and subtracting elements from multiple photographs to achieve the perfect composition before beginning to paint. “As my artwork is realistic, one might be tempted to think they are copies from nature,†says the artist. “Really, they are composed–every detail is considered. It is a balance between what is seen, what is true to nature, and what can make a good painting.â€Words that describe this painting: Hopperesque, Hopper, NYC, New York, cityscape, Bowery, realism, cityscape, facade, street, buildings, architecture, windows, oilpaint, small, travel, architecture, travel, realism, oil painting, blue, orange

$4,560 Sale Price20% Off - Southland BoothsBy Matt CondronLocated in Fairfield, CTHaving spent many years as a photographer, Matt Condron is trained to recognize the importance of a moment or the preciousness of a fleeting opportunity. He is captivated by the idea of emptiness, as both a suggestion of solitude and as a state rife with the possibility of change and fulfillment. As a painter, he seeks out familiar, evocative scenes and concentrates on capturing the stillness of an empty room or vacant chair. His paintings can be seen as solitary, or as simply aberrant pauses between moments of frantic activity. The works are imbued with a quality of light that brings simple, content-rich objects into sharp focus. Condron attempts to establish not so much a connection to a chair or a room, but the feeling created by the wide embrace of emptiness. Ultimately, Condron creates scenes - part representation of real places, part invention from deep in his mind. The openness of his works invites the viewer to share the moment of quiet with him. By choosing places that seem to have been abruptly vacated, he attempts to awaken a connection to the moment before, or to the quietude he preserves inside himself in the form of memories.
