Robert Gemmell Hutchison RSA RSW
Robert Gemmell Hutchison RSA RSW (1855-1936)- Late 19thC Oil, The Spinning Wheel

Unknown

About the Item

A beautifully considered and composed interior scene with nods to the darkened Dutch interiors of the 1600s, this late 19th Century oil shows a skilled hand and an accomplished eye, showing an old woman with a crisp black headscarf standing at her spinning wheel, holding her spindle in one hand, with a delightfully fine line of taught wool stretching across the composition. The light flash of colour in her neckerchief and decisive shapes and lines of the wheel and thread add much visual narrative. The artist has signed to the lower left and the painting is on an attractively sized wood panel. On wood panel.
