About the Item

McKenzie's paintings depict the built landscape, exploring changes in our architecture (what we build) for evidence of social, economic, and cultural shifts (why we build). Past series have focused on suburban subdivisions, construction sites, and abandoned homes and factories. More recently, McKenzie documented the white-walled interiors of galleries and museums—the architecture of the art world. With these gallery and museum paintings, she examines the nature and structure of exhibition space and the role it plays in framing and orienting our experience of art. The rooms and corridors depicted in these works are simultaneously austere and opulent; makeshift and highly controlled; impersonal and sacred. The artist celebrates these pristine rooms and the works of art they feature but also raises issues of access and inclusion. Historically, these institutional rooms have been highly exclusive, promoting a narrow, dominant art narrative while omitting alternative perspectives. As these paintings reveal, these spaces have the power to confer status and meaning on the art contained within and the individuals who gain entry, and they likewise can withhold that status from others. With an emphasis on geometry, pattern, and surface, McKenzie's work hovers in a zone between stark realism and abstraction. Playing with the materiality of paint, oils and acrylics are used to juxtapose various painting “styles” on each canvas, deliberately undermining the illusion of depth and the overall unity of the completed image. The work often appears photo-realistic when seen in reproduction, but, seen in person, the painted surface asserts itself forcefully, enabling the viewer to discover the process by which the image was constructed.
