NORMAN B. WOOLWORTH” PROVENANCE: Mrs. Norman B. Woolworth, New York EXHIBITED: Coe Kerr Gallery, Inc., New York, The American Painting Collection of Mrs. Norman B. Woolworth: An Exhibition for the Benefit of The Girl Scout Council of Greater New York (November 10 28, 1970), p. 47, fig. 2 A native of Newport, Kentucky, Thomas Anshutz was known primarily for his paintings of female figures, usually isolated in a contemplative or coquettish pose. He arrived in New York in 1873 to study at the National Academy of Design under Lemuel Wilmarth. Two years later, he continued his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy under Thomas Eakins and Christian Schussele, and became Eakins’ assistant and protégé, eventually succeeding him as Chief Demonstrator of Anatomy in 1881 and Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing in 1882. Anshutz had the dark palette and realistic approach to figure painting similar to Eakins. The 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia stimulated public interest in American colonial history, decorative arts, and customs. Prominent artists such as Thomas Eakins (1844-1916) produced works that represented women seated in colonial interiors, dressed in old-fashioned attire, and engaged such domestic activities as knitting and spinning, or simply lost in thought. Anshutz’s Sewing by the Hearth exemplifies both Eakins’s powerful influence and the post-Centennial nostalgia for early American antiquarian genre subjects.

He began his apprenticeship very young with José María Romero, with whom he remained for two years until entering the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was under the tutelage of Eduardo Cano. In 1860, when he was only 16 years old, he sold his work Little Philosophy for 2,000 reais at the Seville Exhibition. In 1867 he traveled to Madrid, where he entered Federico Madrazo's studio. There he established friendship with painters Eduardo Rosales and Fortuny. He went regularly to the Prado where he copied Velázquez, from whom he acquired spontaneity and the use of color for his technique. Finally, and out of admiration for Fortuny's orientalist painting, he returned to Seville and organized an excursion to Morocco. At the end of 1868 he decided to travel to Rome accompanied by the painters Rafael Peralta and Luis Jiménez Aranda...
