King Ahasuerus Schönfeld Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Religious

1640-1680

About the Item

Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (Biberach an der Riss, 1609 - Augsburg, 1694) King Ahasuerus rewards Mordecai's loyalty and appoints him prime minister Oil painting on canvas, 90 x 142 cm., In frame 114 x 168 cm. We proudly propose this jewel by Johann Heinrich Schönfeld, one of the most eminent German painters of the Baroque era, depicting a fascinating biblical episode that sees the Persian king Ahasuerus, Aman, his evil prime minister and the virtuous Mordecai as protagonists in the palace of Babylon. who will save the king and the Jewish people. German artist of noble origins, Schönfeld spent a long period of his career in Italy. He was first in Rome in 1633, under the protection of Paolo Giordano II Orsini, where he was influenced by the classicist tendencies of Nicolas Poussin and by the Baroque decorativism of Pietro da Cortona, then (from 1638) in Naples, where he made his own, reinterpreting it, the luminism of Caravaggesque origin by Bernardo Cavallino and Andrea Vaccaro. His compositions are articulated in large environments, often outdoors, with a theatrical imprint, where the gestures of the protagonists play an important role in conveying the narrative sense, giving his works an incredibly modern tone. Our canvas is distinguished by a virtuosity and a modernity in the study of unique colors, where the light and delicate tones, the vibrant and nervous brushstrokes and the strong and direct light make the figures evanescent, almost vibrant. Not a well-known painter, given the scarcity of works on the antiques market, Schönfeld, however, boasts an important presence with his paintings in international museums; Works: * Allegory of time, oil on canvas, 94 x 129 cm, around 1630, Rome, National Gallery of Ancient Art * Adoration of the Holy Trinity, oil on canvas, 183 x 125 cm, 1647-1649, Paris, Louvre Museum * Christ on the Mount of Olives, 26.1 x 21 cm, around 1670-1675, Vienna, Kunsthistorisches Museum * The rape of the Sabine women, oil on canvas, 99 x 134 cm, around 1633, Saint Petersburg, Hermitage Museum * The fall of Phaeton, 81 x 67.5 cm, about 1635-1637, Rome, Palazzo Barberini * Shiites at Ovid's tomb, oil on canvas, 110 x 93.5 cm, Budapest, Museum of Fine Arts * The Triumph of David, 115 x 207 cm, around 1640-1642, Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle * The Triumph of Venus, oil on canvas, 70 x 123 cm, 1640-1645, Berlin, Staatliche Museen * The massacre of the innocents, 102 x 147 cm, around 1644-1645, Biberach an der Riß, Braith-Mali Museum The proposed painting illustrates an episode, as fascinating as it is complex, in the book of the Old Testament entitled to Queen Esther: here we narrate the gratitude of the Persian king Ahasuerus to Mordecai, who will be here appointed prime minister of the court in place of the evil Haman, condemned for having plotted against the sovereign and attempted to exterminate the Jewish people. The work is characterized by the happy setting of the scene and its sumptuous setting, centered on the figure of the King enthroned, surrounded by the variegated group of court dignitaries and soldiers, among which Aman, kneeling at his feet, and the virtuous Mordecai, who instead stands before the sovereign. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is completed by a pleasant antique frame. The painting is sold with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. We take care and organize the transport of the purchased works, both for Italy and abroad, through professional and insured carriers.
