About the Artist:
A.D. Greer, born in Pond Creek, Oklahoma on December 25, 1904, was a celebrated American artist known for his luminous landscape and still-life paintings. Despite being self-taught, Greer mastered the art of rendering landscapes and still lives with a remarkable level of realistic detail. His depictions of the American West, particularly the Grand Canyon and Yosemite Falls, garnered significant public and critical acclaim. Influenced by renowned landscape painters like Robert William Wood, Thomas Moran, Frederic Edwin Church, and Albert Bierstadt, Greer's romantic style captivated viewers. An artist, poet, lecturer, and illustrator, Greer's popularity soared, with his paintings commanding high-dollar values. Although primarily residing in New York City, he frequently painted landscapes of the southwestern United States. He also mentored several other artists including Milbie Benge and Gary Lynn Roberts. Greer's profound observation of beauty and his ability to preserve it in his artwork earned him a revered status among Texas landscape painters. He passed away on February 9, 1998, in Austin, TX.

A.D. Greer
Oklahoma-born artist A.D. Greer had a talent for filtering out the undesirable elements of his environment — pushing any ugliness or unpleasantness from his mind as he painted — to bring the beauty of the land to the forefront. His immersive paintings transport the viewer in an instant to a calm lakeshore or a quiet country road.
Born Aubrey Dale Greer in Oklahoma City, the artist’s mother died when he was three. His family moved – by covered wagon — to Kansas where he grew up. Greer had a brief boxing career after graduating from St. John's Military Academy in Salina, but when the Great Depression brought the economy to a screeching halt, Greer took on whatever work he could get, including lumberjacking and setting spikes on the railroad.
Greer was able to supplement the income he earned as a laborer by doing decorative painting and murals on water towers, smokestacks and restaurant walls. He credited his artistic talents for keeping him flush throughout the greatest economic downturn in American history.
In 1934, Greer opened a studio in Oklahoma City where he painted stage curtains for theaters around the country. He painted with a realistic style that surpassed his counterparts in the business, and his curtains saw great demand. Hiring a group of traveling salesmen, Greer found modest success.
Greer continued to produce proper landscape paintings, and was eventually approached by his friend, American painter Leonard Woodruff, to allow the International Art Publishing Company of Detroit to publish two of his works for free. He agreed, and the works sold over a million copies. Greer saw no compensation for those sales, but his name and reputation spread all over the United States.
Greer continued to create vivid, beautiful landscapes and other types of paintings until he died in 1998.

The lighthouse in the distance is the Mile Rocks Lighthouse in San Francisco Bay, built in 1906 after many shipwrecks made the lighthouse necessary. In 1962 the lighthouse was reduced in size to make room for a helipad.
Arnautoff was the son of a Russian Orthodox priest. He showed a talent for art from an early age and hoped to study art after graduating from the gymnasium in Mariupol. With the outbreak of World War I, he enrolled in the Yelizavetgrad Cavalry School. He went on to hold military leadership positions in the army of Nicholas II and the White Siberian army. With the defeat of the Whites in Siberia, he crossed into northeastern China and surrendered his weapons. Arnautoff remained in China for five years. He again tried to pursue art, but was impoverished and took a position training the cavalry of the warlord Zhang Zuolin. He met and married Lydia Blonsky and they had two sons, Michael and Vasily.
In November 1925 Arnautoff went to San Francisco on a student visa to study at the California School of Fine Arts. There he studied sculpture with Edgar Walter and painting with several instructors. William Sharp was born on June 13, 1900, in Lemberg, Austria, where he attended college and the Academy for Arts and Industry. He later studied in Kraków, Poland, and in Berlin and Munich, Germany. Sharp began his career as a designer of stained-glass windows and as a painter of murals. He served in the German army during World War I. After the war he became a newspaper artist in Berlin and a well-known etcher.
Sharp drew political cartoons that were bitterly critical of the growing Nazi movement. As the influence of National Socialism intensified, he began to contribute drawings, under a pseudonym, to publications that were hostile to Hitler. After Hitler assumed power, Sharp was confronted with these drawings and told that he would be sent to a concentration camp. However, in 1934, he escaped to the United States.
His first newspaper assignment in America was making courtroom sketches for The New York Mirror...
