About the Item

Annamarie Dzendrowskyj Twilight – Poland I Signed by the artist Original oil painting on linen Canvas size: H 38cm x W 28 cm Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look. Annamarie seeks to explore that ‘grey area’ between presence and absence in her atmospheric works- an investigation into the indeterminate nature of ‘ways of seeing’ and ‘being’. Informed by her career as a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor/Examiner, the works present the emergence and dissolution of forms and settings, reflecting the experience of underwater vision. Discover new works by Annamarie Dzendrowskyj available to buy online and in our art gallery. Born in London, Annamarie Dzendrowskyj originally trained as a classical ballet dancer before completing a degree in Philosophy at Lancaster University, followed by a career as a Scuba Diving Instructor and Examiner for PADI Asia Pacific. She studied Fine Art at the National Art School in Sydney, where she was awarded a BA Degree with Honours in Painting in 2011. She is currently based in London and travels when possible in search of new inspiration. Annamarie seeks to explore and paint that ambiguous ‘grey area’ between presence and absence in atmospheric and haunting landscapes. Her images evoke a kind of netherworld that conflates time, place vision, and memory. Life as a scuba diving instructor informs her ‘eye’ resulting in work that reflects the experience of underwater vision. Everything seen is affected by movement, light and weather conditions and in this sense, nothing appears clearly defined. The starting points for her are digital images shot through the window of a moving car or bus, often when misted with rain or condensation. Distancing and isolating herself through the device of the window glass or camera lens from physical immersion in a location. The images are translated into oil paintings, and explore the tension between figuration and abstraction and the way in which the viewer understands or perceives time and place. The portrayal of light and surface considerations are key to the sense of presence and absence in Annamarie’s subtle but complex works. Annamarie’s work has been displayed in solo and group exhibitions, received a number of art prizes and her work is held in both public and private collections.

Kakadu
By Helen Robinson
Located in Deddington, GB
A memory of past travels to the beautiful, unspoilt and timeless Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territories. The white egret provides the focal point, flying above the wetlands towards the distant gum trees with their distinctive white trunks. The main colours are blends of blues and greens with a cream strip defining the break between floodplains and land. Helen Robinson, painter, is available for sale online and in our art gallery at Wychwood Art. Helen Robinson's atmospheric oil paintings represent impressionable moments in her life, mostly inspired by her love of travel and the sea. Following a career in town planning, Helen pursued her interest in art and has now been painting regularly for over 15 years. In 2013, she obtained an Honours degree in Art History when she found she was drawn mostly to artists who painted light. Influences include the 17th century Dutch landscape painters...

This is a Real Place! 1: large painting of lake or river w/ blue water & bridge
By Brooke Lanier
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"In the series “This is a real place!” I was fascinated by how the underside of the pier at Saint Simons Island, GA was like a readymade collage. The way the pilings and rails divide and frame the spaces between them looks artificially imposed on the scene until you notice the way the waves bounce off the pilings and the railings cast shadows on the water. In some iterations, I chose to simplify the structures of the pier and lighten the values so that it would emphasize the detail in the water. Likewise, I omitted a family of starlings and their droppings in favor of highlighting the geometry of the architecture and the colors and patterns of the water. Making paintings in a series allows me to investigate the results of making different decisions about an image. How I crop or stylize it, the manner in which I apply the paint, what gets included or excluded all add shades of meaning to each piece. Additionally, depictions of the same subject in different weather, seasons, times of day, and tides allows me a deeper understanding. I notice more relationships, colors, and details every time I paint the subject. Every painting is a pile of decisions. Playing with removing more and more details to see what is truly important sometimes improves the painting. The fewer elements you include in an image, the more each one means, and the more important it is to get each thing perfect. At times I like to paint every single detail I can find in a scene, and other times I feel like the unadorned components are sufficient to hold each other in a satisfying composition. I often add simplified shapes to my paintings to highlight the presence of absence or to heighten the importance of each area by creating stark visual contrasts. The physicality of the paint also plays a role. I used highly textured, thickly applied paint to construct the solid structural elements, and luminous layers of thinly glazed paint for the delicate linework and subtle blending of the water." - Brooke Lanier...
